Preserving a living legacy
Fenix Society was born from the mission of Guardians of the City, a nonprofit organization formed in 2010 to preserve and share the history of San Francisco’s first responders.
Guardians brought together the work and traditions of organizations that had already dedicated themselves to protecting this history, including the San Francisco Police Museum and the San Francisco Fire Department Historical Society, whose roots extend back to the St. Francis Hook & Ladder Society.
Today, Guardians safeguards an extraordinary collection of artifacts, equipment, photographs, documents, and personal stories spanning generations of public service. Portions of that collection can be experienced through its existing museum and public exhibitions. Much more remains carefully preserved in storage, waiting for the space necessary to bring its stories fully into public view.
Fenix Society began as part of the journey toward making the museum financially sustainable.
It started with new merchandise for our gift shop, but the opportunity quickly became much larger.
The layer everyone lives in
The first idea grew from the familiar firehouse station shirt. But when we looked more closely, we saw that the need extended far beyond one station or even one profession.
Firefighters, law-enforcement officers, EMS professionals, medical professionals, dispatchers, and countless others spend long shifts in duty apparel. It may be worn beneath a uniform, under protective equipment, or as part of the uniform itself.
It is worn at the station, in a patrol vehicle, aboard an ambulance, inside a hospital, throughout a shift, and often long after the workday ends.
For many professionals, a duty shirt is not simply required clothing. It is one of the most frequently worn pieces in their wardrobe. They depend on it for comfort at work and continue wearing it off duty because it represents their agency, unit, profession, community, or personal pride.
That everyday layer deserved more attention.
The overlooked everyday layer
The missing piece of the PFAS conversation
Within the fire service, PFAS has become a serious and well-known concern. Research, advocacy, and reform efforts have rightly focused considerable attention on turnout gear and the protective equipment firefighters rely upon in hazardous environments.
Those efforts are essential.
But Fenix saw another layer that was largely missing from the conversation: the everyday duty T-shirt worn beneath the uniform and protective gear, close to the body, for hours at a time.
The same category of duty apparel is worn every day by law enforcement, EMS, medical professionals, and others whose work demands comfort, durability, and reliability.
A T-shirt cannot solve the entire PFAS challenge facing the fire service, and we would never claim that it can. But we can choose not to intentionally add PFAS to the duty shirts we make. We can ask harder questions about materials, treatments, manufacturing, and transparency. And we can use that decision to bring greater attention to why the everyday layers matter too.
By addressing this overlooked piece of duty apparel, Fenix is extending the conversation from the specialized protective layer to the clothing people live and work in every day.
Better duty apparel from the inside out
That work became PURE ZERO™, our more transparent approach to everyday duty apparel.
Our PURE ZERO Duty T-Shirts begin with 100% cotton, a modern uni-fit for a wider range of body shapes, construction designed for comfort and repeat wear, and no intentionally added PFAS from the application of logos and graphics.
We set out to create a shirt people would choose because it feels right, fits well, and belongs in their everyday wardrobe, not simply because it supports a worthy cause.
It should work beneath a uniform. It should remain comfortable through a long shift. And it should be something people are proud to wear when the shift is over.
Because mission-driven merchandise should never ask someone to choose between meaning and quality.
First responders and service professionals deserved better. So we decided to build better.
The product must earn the purchase
Fenix was not created to place meaningful logos on ordinary products.
We build apparel people should genuinely want to own and wear before they ever learn where the profits go. That means respecting expectations for design, materials, comfort, fit, transparency, and a premium experience from the first impression through delivery.
Purpose should deepen the value of an exceptional product. It should never be used to excuse an unremarkable one.
The product earns the purchase. The story gives it meaning.
Commerce in service of mission
Creating better products revealed another challenge.
Many nonprofit and public-safety organizations have powerful stories and deeply committed communities, but they are not built to manage product development, ecommerce, payments, fulfillment, worldwide shipping, customer service, returns, sales-tax administration, and commercial compliance.
Fenix Society became the commercial enterprise behind the partnership.
We build and manage the commerce so our partners can remain focused on their missions. We help transform their history, identity, and community connection into thoughtfully developed products and more dependable sources of support.
80%+More than 80% of Fenix profits support our nonprofit and public-safety partners.
That support helps organizations preserve history, expand education, strengthen community programs, and pursue work that conventional fundraising alone may not sustain.
The fire we all carry
Fenix was born within the first-responder community, but the values behind it reach far beyond any single profession or uniform.
Some people wear Fenix because they serve. Others wear it because someone they love serves, because an agency or unit shaped their community, because they take pride in their profession, or because they believe the people and institutions protecting and caring for others deserve meaningful support.
Our community includes people who serve, protect, heal, teach, build, defend, volunteer, preserve, and rebuild. It also includes the families, friends, neighbors, and allies who stand beside them.
We offer people a way to learn the stories, honor them accurately, wear them with respect, and help carry their missions forward.
Belonging here cannot be purchased. It is found in shared values and expressed through how people choose to show up and contribute.
That is The Fire We All Carry: the instinct to protect what matters, rebuild what has been broken, and leave something stronger behind.
The Fenix Standard
Everything we build is guided by four commitments:
Product with integrity
Create products worthy of being chosen and worn on their own merits.
Better questions about materials
Examine what goes into everyday apparel and pursue greater transparency wherever possible.
Stories told truthfully
Honor real people, professions, organizations, places, and traditions with accuracy and respect.
Partnerships built for shared value
Return meaningful support to the organizations behind the stories while allowing them to remain focused on their missions.
This is how Fenix turns recognition into connection, connection into participation, and participation into lasting impact.
Help build what comes next
Our first chapter remains inseparable from Guardians of the City and its ambition to create a new First Responder Museum & Safety Learning Center.
The goal is a place capable of bringing more of its remarkable collection into public view, connecting historic artifacts with living experience, and helping future generations understand the service, ingenuity, sacrifice, and resilience that shaped San Francisco.
Fenix is one way of making ambitions like this more achievable.
As we grow, we are carrying the same model forward with nonprofit and public-safety partners whose stories deserve to be preserved, whose work deserves to be strengthened, and whose communities deserve products made with care.
If you believe service deserves recognition, history deserves protection, everyday products should be made more thoughtfully, and commerce should return more value to the organizations behind the story, there is a place for you in what we are building.
The product earns the purchase.
The story gives it meaning.
The mission carries it forward.
